When you find out you're pregnant

Receiving a Maternity Health Record Book (boshitecho) and Paternity Health Record Book

When you find out you’re pregnant, notify the Asago City Health Center or any branch Office. You will be provided with a Maternity Health Record Book and Paternity Health Record Book. The Maternity Health Record Book is also available in foreign-language versions.
The Maternity Health Record Book is a handbook to keep records about pregnancy and the baby’s health condition. You need it for health checkups or receiving vaccinations.

Prenatal checkups

When pregnant, please get regular prenatal checkups at a hospital. These checkups make sure the pregnant person and the baby are doing well. They are available regularly until the baby is born. The city subsidizes the cost of prenatal care.

Birth

Notification of birth

If you have a child in Japan, regardless of nationality submit a birth notification to the City Office. Decide the child’s name and prepare the necessary documents by then.

Within 14 days

For a new baby to continue living in Japan, it is necessary to obtain a residence permit for it. Please apply for a residence permit at the Immigration Services Bureau within 30 days from the birth.
When you have a baby, please notify your country of origin as well. Please check with the embassy or consulate in Japan about the procedures for birth notification and obtaining nationality for the child.

Childbirth Lump-Sum Allowance

People insured by National Health Insurance or other health insurance will receive a Childbirth Lump-Sum Allowance when they give birth. Using the Direct Payment System for the Childbirth Lump-Sum Allowance enables reducing the up-front payment for childbirth at medical institutions.The procedures are carried out at the hospital.

Neonatal visits

Midwives and public health nurses do home visits on new babies to check the infant’s health condition. They also help answer questions about raising children.

Children's health

Infant health checkups

These regularly check the baby's development and nutritional status, and whether it has any congenital diseases. Parents can also talk to a pediatrician or public health nurse about any concerns they have.

Vaccinations

Vaccination is effective to preventing illness or alleviating symptoms by building immunity in advance of exposure to disease. Immunization with vaccines is important to prevent contracting infectious diseases.
Asago City pays the full cost involved in routine immunizations. The vaccination vouchers issued by Asago City are required to receive vaccinations with no out-of-pocket expenses. Vouchers will be posted to you before the baby is two months old. Please keep them safe until all the courses of vaccination are completed.
Two types of vaccinations are available.

Routine immunizations Children receive these vaccinations at set ages, and they are free of charge.
Optional immunizations Parents can choose to have their child receive these vaccines. Please discuss them with your doctor if you prefer your child to receive them. A fee will apply.
*Partial subsidies are available for children’s influenza vaccinations.

Medical costs subsidy system for infants and children Children from birth to age 18 No co-payment is required for either hospitalization or outpatient treatment if your child receives care using health insurance for illness or injury at a medical institution. However, fees apply depending on your income as well as for costs not covered by insurance such as medical certificates and medicine bottles.
Child support assistance People raising a child through to graduation from middle school An amount is paid according to the child's age. Completing procedures at the Citizens Section or Branch Office is required.

Asago City Child Care Learning Center

Registration is open to children who have not yet started elementary school and their parents. The Center provides an environment to make friends with fathers and mothers who have children of a similar age. Facilities include a fun play and event space, while parenting mentors are available for support and consultation.

Child raising mutual support program

Family Support Center Program

People who want to receive support raising children (members requesting help) and those who want to provide support (members able to help) register for the Program, and engage in community-based child-raising support activities while building mutual trust.

Activities
  • Looking after children for a short time before the opening or after the closing of childcare centers
  • Taking children to and from childcare centers, etc.
  • Looking after children so parents can go shopping or attend a wedding, funeral, etc.
  • Looking after children to help members balance work and child care
