Taxes
Everyone living in Japan pays taxes, even if they are a foreign national.
Income tax
Income tax is levied on income earned from January to December each year.
Method of payment
A person whose only income is salary | Tax is deducted from your monthly salary. |

A person with income other than salary | File a tax return at the tax office by yourself and pay the tax. |
Resident tax
Resident tax is levied on people who have an address in Asago City on January 1 according to their income in the previous year.
Method of payment

Ordinary collection | People who are self-employed, farmers, or freelancers will be sent a Premium Notice and a Payment Statement by the City Office. Please use the Payment Statement to pay at a bank, post office, or convenience store. You can also pay with a smartphone app. |
*If you are leaving Japan permanently, please decide on a tax payment administrator and notify the City Office before leaving.

Automobile tax and light motor vehicle tax
Automobile tax and light motor vehicle tax are payable by people who own cars, motorcycles, etc. on April 1. You will receive a Premium Notice and a Payment Statement from the City Office. Please use the Payment Statement to pay at a financial institution or convenience store. You can also pay with a smartphone app after completing the necessary procedures.
*Automobile tax and light motor vehicle tax are levied on the owner as of April 1. If you give away or scrap a vehicle, please make sure to carry out the name change or scrapping procedures.
Fixed asset tax
This tax is levied on people who own fixed assets (land, buildings, and depreciable assets) in Asago City as of January 1 every year. Persons with depreciable assets must report the status of those assets on January 1 by January 31 of each year.

These are social insurance systems to receive pension payments from if you are elderly or have a disability. Japanese public pensions include the National Pension and Employee Pension Insurance.
National Pension
Coverage | All people aged 20 to 59 living in Japan, including foreign nationals |

Procedures | Carry out the procedures at the City Office Citizens Section. If you are a member of Employee Pension Insurance at your company, you will automatically join the National Pension. No further procedures are required. |
Premiums | The insurance premiums are the same amount for everyone. You can pay at a financial institution or convenience store with a Payment Statement sent from the Japan Pension Service, or by bank transfer or credit card. If you are struggling to pay the premiums due to reasons such as having a low income, on application you may be exempted from having to pay. Please ask the Citizens Section for details. |

Coverage |
People up to 69 years of age, including foreign nationals, who work for a company with five or more employees. A pension is paid separately to the basic pension of the national pension. |

Premiums |
Premiums are paid half by the employer and half by the employee. The premium amount varies depending on your salary. Please ask your employer or the Japan Pension Service for details. |
Lump-sum withdrawals
A lump-sum withdrawal payment system is available for National Pension and Employee Pension Insurance. A foreign national who pays pension premiums for more than six months and applies for withdrawal within two years after leaving Japan will receive a lump-sum payment.
