Medical insurance system
Everyone who lives in Japan must sign up for public medical insurance. By everyone paying premiums, this system enables reducing the burden on each other. Treatment is available by paying 30% of the total medical expenses out of pocket. The medical insurance system in Japan includes other health insurance, National Health Insurance, and the Medical Care System for the Elderly Aged 75 and Over.
Always take your health insurance card with you to the hospital. If you don't have a health insurance card with you or are not enrolled in medical insurance, you will have to pay the full medical expenses out of pocket.

If you go to the hospital without your health insurance card, you must pay the full medical expenses out of pocket. A reimbursement of the portion that insurance covers is available by applying afterwards with your insurance card and other necessary items.

Death
When a family member or a person who lives with you dies, regardless of nationality, the death is notified to the City Office. The Notification of Death Form is submitted together with the death certificate prepared by the doctor who confirmed the death.
